March 14/2023 part 2 because I don’t want to forget the infamous haircut day and photos are good memories too! He was, as always, the most selfless, calm, entertaining girl dad. He still looks handsome even with a short haircut done by his daughters. And I made him a good stick-to-the-ribs pot roast dinner afterwards. ☺️ a good night in our cozy house.

March 14, 2023. More snow. Like so much snow! So late in the season. Snuck in a date night and navigated a few challenging things but this month is kinda non-stop challenges coming at us. It’s a season. Just like the snow. And date night fixed everything! That and a well-shaken sidecar. 🥂

Feb 27/2023. Spent a snowy Monday in Ogden, Utah waiting for the rodeo to start! Enjoyed our cozy tent camp, ate leftover pizza, built snowmen, exercised and cared for horses, went on snow walks and had a yummy taco dinner with @passalacquawinery. Back to the trailer to sleep and awake for a few hours in the middle of the night when a snow squall came through with thunder, lightning, winds and hail! Tent survived. :) Ready for the rodeo to start tomorrow but enjoying the adventure in the meantime!

Feb 24/2023. Woke up to a ton of fresh snow! So much that the mountain pass was closed and we had to wait it out to make the trek to mount Ashland for the first school ski day of the season. But it cleared up by 9am and we were on the road! Carpooled with another mom and hung out in the cozy lodge for the day while the girls skied and snowboarded (JJ) with all of their friends. The highway closed again that afternoon but they held traffic just above where the ski mountain comes out – so we got to drive home on clear roads with not another car on them! Cozy Friday night at home after a full day on the mountain. ⛷️

I can’t believe how far we’ve come. Fresh faced almost a decade ago with big dreams to raise and sell really good beef from start to finish… Doing things the right way isn’t easy. And being really proud of the best possible animal care and end product for your customers means a lot of extra attention and time and honestly… blood, sweat and tears. There are big obstacles in this industry to get quality meats on your table direct from a family ranch. But not doing it all and doing it really well wasn’t an option for us. Last year we opened the doors to Five Marys Custom Meat Co and we are so proud to have a talented team of craft butchers making certain every steak we produce is dry-aged, cut and packaged beautifully and each pound of ground beef is handled the same. We are able to use more of each animal and produce custom cuts for our customers. This month, we’ve successfully harvested our own beef (beeves!) under USDA inspection right here on the ranch in our harvest barn and mobile unit. We have a team of three plus Brian and a USDA inspector on site at all times to ensure animal handling and harvest is done according to protocol and care standards and each carcass is inspected before it comes to Five Marys Custom Meat Co for aging and butchering. This was our big dream that seemed so unattainable – and it’s been an incredible amount of labor and thought and resources involved to get here. But to finally be vertically integrated and to have control over every step of the process is so worth it – knowing we are doing the best for our animals and for our customers!

I love a full week at home to COOK in my kitchen! Having good quality meats honestly sales it so easy. I grocery shop once a week for produce (broccoli, zucchini, yellow squash, tomatoes, carrots, brussels and asparagus usually) and potatoes, rice, tortillas, noodles and bread – along with butter, milk, cream, cheese and olive oil. I pull out some ground beef, beef fajita strips or steak bites and a few nice steaks or pork chops to put in my meat bin in the fridge to thaw. I don’t meal plan, but I know with this system I always have something to cook up for a great, easy but delicious dinner no matter how many I’m feeding. Good quality meats on hand makes it so easy and no matter how simple the recipe or cooking style (simpler the better) you can’t go wrong. We ship to all 50 states for a flat rate – so you can stock up or split an order with friends to reduce the shipping! Arrives overnight on dry ice and you’re all set. Thanks to all of you who order consistently from Five Marys or have tried us! Can you tell the Five Marys difference!? #shopfivemarys #fivemarysmeats #dryagedbeef #ranchraised #ranchraisedbeef

Feb 19/2023. Spent a Sunday deep cleaning the house while Brian hauled the girls to a barrel race in Grants Pass, Oregon for the day. They all competed in barrel racing and pole bending – Maisie and Tater had the shining run of 14.098 seconds to WIN 1st place in youth and the open (adults too) with the fastest time of the day! There were 105 contestants so it was a long day of barrels – and then they all competed in poles. JJ had a beautiful pole run with Stretch and is really improving! They got home late but I had a steak and potatoes dinner waiting to feed the tired, happy crew… who were all excited for a clean house too! 😚

Feb 18/2023. Happy 12th birthday JJ! You’ve always been our wild child. Named MaryJane… you quickly earned the nickname JJ for your spunky, quirky, fabulous personality. You have always had your own style, often with clothes a few sizes too small. 😂 You are a great story teller and performer but you prefer to only share those gems with those close to you. You used to hate the spotlight but have gotten used to performing and rocking rodeo events. You are funny, kind, smart and very confident in who you are are. I hope that never changes. You love you family, your friends, building Legos, shopping, rodeo and your horse Stretch. We love you. 1️⃣2️⃣

Feb 12-18/2023. Maisie got to spend a week with Mariella – a good friend who has become a mentor for Maisie. Mariella is a senior and it’s her last year of high school rodeo. She sold her sweet mare “Tater” to Maisie this year and has helped coach her through learning and clicking with Tater to be smoking really fast runs and getting so much improvement! Mariella’s family are also our partners Passalacqua winery with Five Marys wine and have become really good family friends. Good enough to keep your kid AND her horse for a week AND taking her to a barrel race!! (4.5 hours south of their house, which Maisie ran the fastest time of the event at but hit a dang barrel!) Brian and I drove down to Healdsburg to pick her up last night (6 hours south of us) and stayed at the winery and had such a nice Saturday morning brunch with Jason, Jess & Mariella! Maisie had the best time and is so lucky for this friendship. Rodeo people are such good people… and even better when they make amazing wine and become great friends! Headed home with a happy, sleepy, grateful Maisie girl – I love that she got to spend this week on her own for memories she will always keep. ♥️ @mariella.passalacqua @passalacquawinery Thank you!!

I’ve never seen Brian put more heart, thought, time, stress, and paperwork (oh the paperwork!!) into anything like he has the past two years to design, build and start operating our on-ranch USDA certified harvest facility. We’ve been officially operating for about three weeks and had our first harvest date for another ranching family last week. So much goes into this process every single time, for every animal – to complete the California Dept of Food & Agriculture’s brand inspection, the USDA and FSIS (Food Safety Inspection Service) in-person and extensive oversight on everything from checking sanitization, temperatures, pre-mortem inspection, harvest procedure, post-mortem inspection and organ inspection – as well as humane animal handling and just making sure it’s all done in the best manner possible for the livestock and for a quality end product. This has been no easy feat. But Brian doesn’t do anything he’s not proud of. And we were both so proud to be able to harvest, dry-age, butcher and package beef for the first of many other ranchers doing the same thing we do – where attention to detail and a great end product matters! @rockinghcattleco @high_noon_beef_co thanks for trusting us with your beef! @m5entrepreneurs
