Feb 15/2023. The dogs enjoyed the snow until it melted mid morning when the sun came out… and I didn’t take many photos so this is a bit of a boring post but some days are huh!? Had a busy day on the ranch and a great call with my Coaching Club M5 Entrepreneurs members this month. It’s amazing how many ranches around the country are jumping into selling beef direct to consumer and I LOVE helping them grow their businesses, especially when I get to help them 1-on-1 in Coaching Club. Brian made his specialty “mustard burgers” for dinner at home – our M5 burger patties with a little yellow mustard spread on before you cook them. The girls love them! Ended the night tired but with a big stack of firewood next to the woodstove which had to make you smile! 🔥 #m5february23

Feb 14/2023. Brian turns 5️⃣1️⃣! The girls stayed up late the night before decorating the kitchen for his birthday table. Only the best for their Foss! (When he turned 45 they nicknamed him Fossil. It stuck.) We cooked a yummy dinner at home with steak, veggies and potatoes and good wine. Maisie is away with her rodeo friend/mentor Mariella – we missed her but she’s having a great time! also, remembering back to a year ago today, when I actually surprised him with all of his siblings and spouses and good friends at a surprise party at the burgerhouse. I still can’t believe I pulled that off without him knowing! I tried the same thing for his 40th birthday but he totally knew – so this one was a big deal. 🎉 We love you Foss! ❤️ (here’s his birthday ode from last year / had to share again ;) Happy birthday to the one who lights up our world – @heffbrian!! He’s a rugged, tough, sweet and kind Valentine’s baby and there’s no one else in the world like him. He can fix anything, he loves his girls fiercely, he tenderly cares for every animal on this ranch, he works so hard everyday, he puts family first and always has. He is smart at solving problems, efficient at coming to the best solution, he calmly mediates issues and does it all with a smile behind that mountain man beard. He’ll read books even when his eyes are barely open, he’ll play guessing games for hours on a car ride, he is calm and patient and loving with his daughters even when it’s stressful situation or emotions run high. He has the messiest desk and pick-up truck around – but somehow knows where all the important things are when we need them (ok maybe most of the time :) We love you Heff! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ #heffbrian #heffturnsfifty #m5birthdays

APRICITY : (n) The warmth of the sun in winter (my new favorite word to describe a very beautiful and welcomed thing!) ☀️ Traded out the cold days and dark nights of winter ranch life for a few sweet days of sunshine and warmth and family. I’ve been slacking on my daily posting and story sharing and email sending and business working and all the things… but I’m soaking up every drop of this goodness.

Jan 29-31/2023. A busy few days with some big things happening! Francie and I made a trip to Red Bluff for some fresh haircuts with our friend @morgandene! We tried to start Maisie’s Kids Cooking Show on Instagram live with her first guests Fran, Lois & Martha from @ballerinafarm but IG had a glitch and you couldn’t go LIVE together with a good connection so we each did our own and the girls made a delicious spaghetti meal! Kids COOKBOOK coming soon. We also had a big week with our first official on-ranch, USDA inspected and certified beef harvests. This took YEARS of planning and so much thought and paperwork and hurdles to jump over under and through. It’s really amazing to harvest our livestock right here in the ranch with no trailering or relying on outside facilities. Brian has done SO much to get us here and has had long days all week setting up our systems and managing the compliance and daily operations which include a USDA inspector from the United States Department of Agriculture here on the ranch for every harvest from start to finish. It’s been an intense week of work but we are proud to be where we are! Oh and we also got to celebrate Karl’s 16th birthday and Tess hasn’t missed a cold morning of duck season on the ponds yet! 😊

Jan 28/2023. Our big lamb working day – the girls rounded up some hard working friends and they rounded up all the momma sheep and lambs in the corrals. They sorted off the lambs and kept them in a smaller pen while the mommas went out to pasture to eat. One at a time they catch a lamb, identify if it’s a boy or girl and hold it until Brian is ready for it. He checks it’s out to make sure everyone is looking healthy and the youngest ones who hasn’t yet get docked tails, a tetanus shot and banded if it’s a boy. We usually ear tag every lamb on this big work day but they sent us the wrong ear tags (huge ones for calves!) so no ear tags for now. (It’s not as essential that we know which lambs go with which moms like it is for our calves) Finished a long day of sheep work with a Burgerhouse lunch, girls exercised their horses, I switched the washing machine out from the little house for the one that won’t work in hopes of starting two weeks worth of laundry (it’s working so far!) and paid a visit to Bruno at Hale Dairy for some fresh milk to make some butter for the girls’ cooking show debut Monday! Ended the night where we always do – cozy by the fire until Brian went to bed and the girls and I all cuddled up in Francie’s bed to watch a little Survivor. #m5yearinphotos #m5january2023 #ranchlife #navajochurrosheep #lambworkingday #m5sheep #m5lambs

Jan 27/2023. Working on the ranch, sorting sheep, moving pigs, feeding cattle, and then breakaway roping practice. Brian’s sister Kat and BIL Donald came for dinner and to stay over and brought JJ’s elk with them. She and cousin Oliver harvested this one together in Burns, OR where they live. A special memory for them both! #m5yearinphotos #january #m5january2023 #ranchlife

Jan 24 & 25/2023. Feeling better! Coming back to life. Cooked dinner for the first time in a week and felt great to be back in my cozy kitchen. Got the new beautiful giant staub I ordered in the mail and just looking at it on the drive for awhile before I tackle a big chili or something! Made pasta tonight with my three favorite Five Marys ground meats. Brian finished chores early and kept me company in the kitchen and told me how it was the best pasta ever (he might lie) and that I looked “cute” in my old sweat pants (ok he really lies). He’s the best.

Jan 23/2023. A little throwback today with some old photos from when we moved to the ranch! I was pulling out the ebook I wrote to give to a friend and came across these babies. 😊 I wrote this book called “They Can Do It” with all the lessons I learned about raising strong, capable, independent kids when we moved to the ranch. Things changed pretty drastically for us and I realized quickly that I wasn’t expecting enough of my kids. When that changed… everything changed! The ebook is still available as a digital download! I just reread it again and so many of the lessons apply to my older kids now too… getting kids to want to work, family culture, chores, and expectations. I’ll link it in my story if you want to download! #ranchlife #fivemarys #fivemarysstory #m5yearinphotos #theycandoitbook

Jan 22/2023. A quiet Sunday at home still feeling not so great, still trying to fix our water pipes issue at the house. Girls came home happy from rodeo and spent some time working around the ranch and with their horses while Brian dug trenches and glued PVC pipe and I drank hot tea and mostly stayed inside. #ranchlife #m5yearinphotos #m5january2023
