10 years!? These just came up on Brians memories from summer 2013 – it was the December after this we bought the ranch and the summer after that we became full time cattle ranchers leaving our matching-dresses suburban life in the rear view mirror. We had no idea how different our life would look one year later let alone TEN YEARS later! I couldnt ever imagine what my life would look like now – but Im so thankful for all of it from the rewarding parts to the hard parts. And those little girls are a lot tougher and more capable little ladies now because of it!

Tessas old faithful horse had to be put down this week. Streak was her first horse and has been retired on the hill by camp for a few years now. He loved sneaking in the kitchen for treats while Im cooking and was as sweet and friendly as they come (Ill copy an older post about Streak below). It was his time to go after a good long life. Our vet confirmed that it was best decision and quality of life always comes first. We will miss you Streak but glad you got to live out your last years with us. from a couple years ago Sweet old Streak is a retired racehorse from Kentucky. He was a stud horse there and likely bred many foals in the racing world. He came to us from a local when his daughter outgrew the horse and was ready for something faster. Streak is 27 now and as they say has more woah than go. He was Tessas first horse and was a safe old boy to let her learn to become a horsewoman. He didnt mind her crawling up learning to mount from a fence post or fumbling to get a halter on correctly. Now shes moved on to a little (or a lot she just wants to go fast!) more speed and Streak gets to spend his days on pasture under the oak trees with the other retired horses at Five Marys. But when Tess comes to find him for a little bareback saunter all she needs is a trusty rope and hes all hers.

Through a new lens some behind-the-scenes shots around the ranch from our filming days with Food52 taken by our friend John @jberweiler. Its so funny that of allll the animals on the ranch – the two feral goats are the most popular at the moment kinda because they are camera hogs! (and food scrap hogs and pooping everywhere hogs). The goats came to the ranch for goat tying for the girls rodeo practice (helps teach younger kids how to properly flank and secure a calf for ranch branding or doctoring) but once they got too big to tie we let them wander to keep grass down around the barns but they LOVE my nice new concrete pad. Did you catch the first episode of Raised on the Ranch? Its linked in my profile and Episode 2 comes out July 9! #fivemarysxfood52 @food52 #raisedontheranch #M5raisedontheranch #ranchlife

Thanks for all the support for our new mini-series Raised on the Ranch sharing our favorite ranch life recipes and stories with you on @food52! Its been a really fun way to share a little more in a new format without taking away too much from ranch work. Thanks to their team we filmed 7 episodes with 10 recipes in one week! A new episode releases every two weeks on Sundays and Ill get to fly to NYC to film the last episode (my Grandpa Jims homemade ravioli recipe!) in the Food52 studio. The first episode is linked in my profile and we have a fun giveaway for $500 on goodies in my stories right now! And Episode 2 at @californiapeonycompany releases a week from Sunday Did you watch!? What did you think of the first episode!? #fivemarys #fivemarysxfood52 #raisedontheranch

Maisie in the summer between 8th grade and high school. Beautiful kind has her own style and a big heart. Shes already 59 (just passed up Francie by a smidge!) and has size 11 shoes in those cute vans. Shes working hard this summer on the ranch raising 4H steers with her sister and riding and roping everyday. Love ya Maisie Photos by @lonelypalmranch @christarenee at @californiapeonycompany

Back on the ranch for a Sunday evening date night and catching up with ranch chores after a few days away for a rodeo. We love the family time on the road and our trailer camp-away-from-home but there is nothing better than being HOME! @lonelypalmranch

Rodeo weekend in Powell Butte Oregon making memories and running barrels! Camped out with lots of friends old school kick ball games fajitas and steak dinners a trip to the arcade to win Dad a tiara for his cowboy hat hammock sleepovers in the trailer and lots of love and care for their faithful horses. The video of Francie running barrels she had a great time to place in the 1D (top times within half a second of the leader) but just out of the money. She loves when the announcer uses Redmans registered name Juan Smooth Cat – and I love how he says woah after her run when her time popped up. This is a very competitive group of barrel racers here so shes happy with that run! Maisie had a great run too and JJ and Tess knocked a barrel of two.

Milo gets a haircut!!! He was so shaggy and got a few foxtails (one between his toes why hes limping) so we had the mobile pet spa pay him a visit. He did not love the groomer but he feels much better for summer weather and foxtail season!

Got the little room in the little house where all four girls slept when we moved here all set up for a summer visitor. This room holds so many memories from Tiny Tess sleeping in a tiny crib I built in the closet while the three big girls shared a double bed – to the triple bunks we built in the closet when Tess grew out of the crib – to the wooden crates the girls made beds in on the floor – and the loft bed Francie built from pallets when she wanted her own space. When we built them a shared room up in the attic this room became their family closet hence all those hooks still on the walls. We had to get creative with six of us in 760 ft when we moved to this little ranch house but the memories of those days are so sweet. Were still pretty cozy together in the big house but Ill always miss the early days in this cozy little house. #m5cabin #m5memories

I need to be better about documenting the in-between. the rodeo performances are so much fun to watch but the magic is in the in-between. The early mornings loading long hours on the road together in the truck six of us piled in a trailer to sleep shower and maybe cry a little after a tough go. Its setting up life on a dirt parking lot for a week of cooking meals and enjoying down time together. Im so thankful for the time rodeo gives us together as a family. Its hard to leave the ranch but these years are short and were making the memories the best we can!
