End of summer feels hit like a ton of bricks up here with the end of fair and fire season clashing together. Camp dinners and clear sky sunsets are cherished all summer and sometimes into fall – but this week we are battening down the hatches watching the wild fires carefully, hoping the smokey skies clear and that new lightning strikes don’t bring new fires. But oh those summer nights.✨ 📸 @kathryngamblephoto for @food52

Siskiyou Golden Fair was a good one! The girls worked hard, got to perform in front of their community at the fair rodeo as flag carriers and barrel racers and breakaway ropers, sold their steers (thanks @passalacquawinery, @finleyfarming & @shasta_livestock & Lassen County Nursery! I’ll post their rodeo wins next because it was a good night! Even the Five Marys Custom Meat Co team got in on the action in the wild calf dressing race. Home to do laundry and get back to ranch life!

Fair week is the only week all year we have to divide and conquer. I live at the fairgrounds day and night with the girls and their steers Tuesday through Sunday. They do all the fair work – cleaning barns and feeding steers and getting ready for the show ring – but I like being here as camp chef and to support the girls and their friends. But it’s too close to our calving season with lots to do on the ranch so Brian comes back and forth for the girls events (it’s only a 30 min drive). In addition to keeping the ranch and businesses going – he transports the girls’ horses for the big fair rodeo night, washes all the white uniforms, brings us diesel for the generators and supports our camp supply. 😊 I’m not used to doing days without him so it makes me appreciate the other 51 weeks of the year! But this week is all about the girls and the traditions of fair week. 🍀

LIFE UPDATE! ✨ This summer has been full of cooking outdoors at camp and the new arena kitchen, watching the girls improve so much in the roping arena, on the road for rodeos and family gatherings, filming fun new projects and meeting new people and trying to keep the gears all turning in between. We are at our county fair this week which always signals the tail end of our summer… Next year, the girls are each doing something a little different for schooling. We are lucky to have so many options to change things up based on what is best for each of them individually… and each will be doing something totally different next year! Homeschooling, Farm Schooling, Independent Study Online and traditional public school will all be in the mix (and Francie turns 16 in September and will start driving!) As a family, we are excited to start calving season next month which takes all six of us to check and sometimes assist our heifers and momma cows as we welcome new calves to the ranch. It’s night and day work but the heartbeat of our ranch every year! Brian and I have a couple new projects we are excited about while we continue to lean hard into running our businesses together as a unit , to provide the best darn meats possible and for your family. The USDA on-ranch harvest and butchery facilities have been a game-changer for our quality and process, but they are never simple! As Brian always says, “if it were easy everyone one do it.” – It’s not easy but it’s worth it. I also have a new book releasing next month (not a cookbook this time!) and a super exciting Five Marys project I’m taking on for the first time in December. Hints : it’s not in California, I’ll be there for 12 days, Brian and the girls will be there for part of it and I will (hopefully!) get to meet some of you there. Any guesses!? 🌟 *and thanks to @kathryngamblephoto for this photo from the @food52 shoot, I love it.

Fitting’ in lots of ranch work, irrigation pipe digging, steer working, cattle sorting, pig moving, horse riding work between summer rodeo days. It’s not easy to juggle both especially with the high standards Brian has for the care and keeping of every animal on this ranch – but we work hard at home and have two great ranch hands, Trevor and Ryan, who keep things going for us when we aren’t here. Teamwork makes it all happen (and teamwork pulls together when things don’t go as planned which is very frequently in ranching!) ♥️ #fivemarys #ranchlife #myfourmarys #girldad #brianandhisgirls photo by @kathryngamblephoto ✨

Etna Rodeo had some highs (Tess wins calf riding and Maisie smokes the barrels for the buckles!) and lows (Redman took a fall in the barrels and was out for the rodeo) but the girls have it their all and loved competing in our hometown rodeo in Etna. Proud of you girls for riding the highlights and finding the best in the hard parts. Overall a great day! ✨

It’s our local July rodeo in Etna today and the girls are competing in most of the events between the slack this morning and the big performance tonight. It’s always fun to rodeo right on our home turf… and not have to drive miles and miles to get here! These photos were from a practice night at our local rodeo grounds when @christarenee was visiting. She always captures the magic… and the spiciness of that littlest sister keeping up with the big girls!
