Jan 21/2023. The girls woke up in Lincoln, CA (about 5 hours south of here) for a big barrels and pole race they had been really excited to enter. They are seasoned rodeo cowgirls now and are experts at packing the trailer, loading their western rodeo attire (there are a lot of things to remember from boots, pearl-snaps, spurs, belts, felts and jeans and accessories!) plus all the tack and gear for their horses AND all the extra stuff they need in the trailer to live in a fairgrounds parking lot for a weekend. I was so bummed I couldn’t go but Brian is the BEST rodeo dad and they had a great time. Highlight reel : Maisie had a beautiful, fast run on her new mare Tater earning her a $550 prize pot for 2nd place in the 2D (half a second off the fastest time). JJ also had a great run on Stretch and won $265 in the junior division! 🏆 They had hoped to make it home Saturday night after the race, but all those barrel racers and pulled in for the afternoon and the trailer was blocked in so they made the best of it – Francie entered an evening race and they stayed another night coming home Sunday morning. Biggest award goes to @heffbrian for sending my these great photos all weekend! #m5yearinphotos #m5january2023 #m5rodeo @m5rodeo

Jan 20/2023. Not gonna lie, it’s been a little rough around here! Still no water at the houses, I came down with the flu (hoping to one else gets it!) so I had to stay home from from a fun weekend rodeo Brian took the girls to in Lincoln, CA. I’ve been resting, making lamb bottles boiling water bottles on the stove and keeping the woodstoves cranking. 🔥 Also, we ran out of our big 50 lb bag of lamb replacer (like a dry formula to make lamb milk bottles) so I went out to get a smaller 8 lb bag to hold us over and it was $73.50. What the heck. 😳

Jan 18/2023. Still no water at the house despite lots of muddy work trying to fix the pipes. Brian was working on it all day in between everything else, but Francie bundled up to keep him company for the late night last attempt (after a few fixes but a few more issues, too cold for PVC glue to stick so no luck) and made him his favorite Rice Krispie treats when he came in. But all the animals have water and we are making lamb bottles with bottled water for now! I also got to take our friend and very capable ranch hand’s senior photos at sunset. James is one of the coolest teenagers I know (pictured with his hound dog Sloane in his plane). He got his pilot’s license before his drivers license and saved up for his own small plane. The sun peaked under the clouds and we got some great photos! Gearing up for a rodeo weekend… #m5yearinphotos #m5january2023 #m5jamesj #teamfivemarys #alwayssomething #ranchlife

Jan 18/2023. Mud and snow took over the day with a broken pump/pipe that cut off our water on half the ranch… but this guy spent the morning working on it and restored water to all the livestock! He has to dig up and repair a broken pipe by the house to get water back for us but we have buckets and bottles for now. Tess helped feed in the morning before the snow. We planned to take horses to the covered arena over the mountain in the afternoon but the snow came in hard and it wasn’t safe to drive (lots of spin outs on the mountain) The girls are working hard on finals to close out their semester this week. Maisie and I had a lunch date before her last in person meeting with her advisor. Im proud of how hard they’ve worked independently this year. Brian rescued a wayward lamb that had found its way on the road and the girls dried it off and warmed it up for a bottle. We all went to the Burgerhouse again for a cozy yummy dinner to wrap up our evening! #m5yearinphotos #january2023 #m5january2023

Jan 17/2023. Francie was up at 4:45am with Brian to have their coffee and hot chocolate by the fire before heading out in the misty morning to do chores. It’s so cold in the mornings there is frost on the INSIDE of our bedroom window. Lots of blankets keep us cozy but it’s cold to get out of bed! Francie took a nap in the feed truck with Bitsy and Milo while Brian took the littles to school and was back in action to help him finish chores. We had a busy day catching up on school, shipping, launching my new coaching program for @m5entrepreneurs and the girls got a good practice in the arena bundled up while it cleared up in the afternoon. Everyone was too tired to cook dinner so Brian abc I ran into town to pick up takeout from Five Marys Burgerhouse and snuck in a date drink while we waited! #m5yearinphotos #m5january2023

Jan 16/2023. A chilly winter day but the sun came out! Girls got to ride horses and rope in the arena after Brian worked up the ground and everyone was happy to be out there. This morning they were getting ready together in the bathroom brushing a knot out of Tessa’s hair that required lots of sisterly support. 🤣 Shipped orders and caught up on schoolwork in town while Gilly relaxed. Started working on a new children’s cookbook inspired by this darling book from my childhood the girls have been busy cooking from. Ended the night with yummy ground beef Thai curry rice bowls and sitting by the woodstove! 🔥 #m5yearinphotos #m5january2023

Jan 15/2023. A Sunday spent feeding cattle, working on the ranch, catching rainbows, cleaning up from rain and mud, caring for lambs, making some beautiful pork chops for dinner with Tess and enjoying family time around the table. #m5yearinphotos #m5january2023 #january152023

Jan 14/2023. My favorite thing about posting a daily series of documentation photos is I’ve been taking more photos of us! Also didn’t realize until it wa over but today was the anniversary of the day he asked me to marry him on a rainy wet muddy day on our friend’s ranch in Red Bluff. We did chores together, drove all the way up the mountain to check our cows, cared for baby lambs, watched most lambs getting bigger and stronger, fed pigs and watched the sunset from a quad. The girls all enjoyed some time with friends this weekend and they were baking and cooking away in the kitchen. Inspired us all to start a KIDS COOKBOOK (coming soon!) and we all enjoyed the fruits (meats and sweets) of their labor. Elk chili, fudge, brownies, butterscotch squares, elk spaghetti tacos (I’m still not sure about that one) and Maisie’s orange chicken and rice. Ended the night with some Five Marys @passalacquawinery red wine and our feet up by the pellet stove. 🔥 #m5yearinphotos #m5january2023 #maryandheff

Jan 13/2023. Ended the night my favorite way, by the fire recapping another good day with the one I love. It’s always the best time of the day! 🔥 Started the day in my shop after feeding lambs and chores, reorganizing a bit so the girls could set up their school desks next to mine upstairs (little flooding issue in the basement where they used to work) and a refresh for the retail shop too. The “Boot Wall” collection of old boots is still a work in progress but coming together and we’ve been sprucing up the rest of the shop too. Took the three oldest girls on a shopping adventure to the nearest Target (1.25 hours away!) for some new bedding and stuff for their rooms. Didn’t take a single photo we were having too much fun but had dinner at our favorite Thai restaurant and came home to CLEAN their rooms and reorganize. Meanwhile Brian and Tess held down the fort in the rain and made a pit stop at Five Marys Burgerhouse for a rocking Friday night with @johnnycallahanmusic and Jake from our awesome team at Five Marys Custom Meat Co accompanying! The Burgerhouse is so much fun on busy Friday nights. #m5yearinphotos #january2023 #m5january2023 #m5january #m5days
