Simo Family Reunion 2023 at Brockway Springs Lake Tahoe was a blast! Filled with paddle boards, games by the pool, cousin time, dock jumping, crawdad catching, dinner making, champagne popping, blackjack playing and a boat ride around the cove. Until next year! ✨✨✨✨✨

Nothing like bringing your kids to one of your childhood favorite places. We’ve been coming to Brockway Springs since I was a baby – I swam in this spot and caught fish on the same pier with my dad in 1978 and came every summer after. *and also so happy to see these four in matching suits 🥰 and they picked them!

Heff family reunion was the best one yet! It’s so fun watching these cousins grow up (and so tall!) and love spending time together. Brian is the oldest of five siblings and all spouses made it with 19 cousins to keep Oma busy. Oh yeah, and Gary joined us this year too. 😎

Celebrating 17 years with my best friend today. ♥️ I could never script the life we’ve created and the winding path to get here – but I sure can’t imagine doing it with anyone else! We dream big, work hard to make our ideas come to life and navigate the hard parts (and drive to many rodeos) together. 17 years later and your rugged ranch look and the grays in your beard only make you more handsome. The smile lines and wrinkles show every day that we’ve walked together through happy moments and hard trials. I’m so thankful for the ways you still look at me and laugh with me every day. Here’s to many more years and adventures together @heffbrian!!

It’s almost fair time around here! The girls have each raised a steer as their 4H project. They choose one from our herd earlier in the year and work with them to walk with a halter and to “fit” them for the showmanship ring. They learn a lot about raising livestock and producing a quality product to feed other families. This year Tess named her steer “Silas” (from Duck Dynasty 🦆) and he’s a huge steer! Last year was her first year showing and she had the biggest steer at the fair. Si might be pretty close again this year! He gains an average of 3 pounds a day when fed and cared for well. You can see her doing the math in her head in the last video. Our auction is August 12 and our local 4H and FFA kids will sell their projects at county fair. If you have a fair near you – it’s a great way to support local and youth agriculture while filling your freezer! And if you want an easy way to do it we purchased the resale hogs from the Jackson County Junior Livestock Auction two weeks ago and will have bundle boxes of 4H and FFA raised pork available to ship to your doorstep next week – stay tuned! 🍀 #m5fairdays #m5maryteresa #4Hproject #m54h

Taylorsville junior rodeo always feels like the best summer has to offer. Great people, small town, mountain views, river swims, tri-tip bbq and some buckles to haul home. It was HOT this year but we had a record no-barrels down four runs and some great goat ties. Not much luck roping but the girls were all in on swimming their horses under the bridge. Until next year Taylorsville! ♥️

We made it to the annual cattle sale live auction in Reno this week for a quick 36 hour trip. Western Video Market sells 150,000 cattle over three days by gathering cattle buyers and sellers together in person (or online bidders) while leaving the cattle happy on their home ranches. They video each group of cattle before the sale and report all of their stats and certifications to make it easy on the livestock. There’s nothing quite like a convention hall full of cowboy hats and those auctioneers on the loudspeakers! We go to buy a load of young yearlings every June and December from one of the ranches we know, trust and who raise cattle just like we do. We go to the auction to buy (even if it’s from our brother-in-law!) because that’s the most fair way to ensure market price. Top of the line cattle deserve the best price! It’s also a great getaway to connect with ranchers we’ve come to know in the industry and enjoy a great (STEAK) dinner tonight! Kids had fun with cousins and I love any excuse to hang out with my sister-in-law @doverspikebeef. 🖤

This summer is a busy one between ranch work, rodeos and a stream of new projects – along with keeping things moving along smoothly at the Farm Store, the Burgerhouse, the Butchery and the Harvest Barn. We have learned to work together side-by-side through all of it – but Brian always says we work because we don’t step on each others toes or second guess each other. We both have roles that are very different in our operation (he raises it, I sell it!) but we overlap enough to work through the hard stuff together and support each other. There’s a lot to keep up with and summer can feel like a whirlwind but we are trying to slow down and enjoy the moments too – everything is better with him by my side! ♥️ #maryandheff #ranchlife #fivemarys Photos by @kathryngamblephoto for the @food52 shoot

Tess wasnt old enough to compete at Silver State last week but she sure made the most of her week as the little sister! She realized she could get a job helping work with the stock contractors and was in charge of goat handling to change out the goat for every runner. She got up early every morning and was in western dress code to work – and back every evening for the second performance. And these goats were big and had horns! Tess gets to rodeo as a junior high competitor (5th grade) next year so this was her last official rodeo as a Little Sisters Club member. Watch out. here she comes!
