Jan 3/2023. Feeding lambs in the baby barn before the sun and after dark. Francie had to pull a lamb by herself that didn’t make it (no photo). Tess helping out on the feed truck early with Dad #heffpics. Brian and I had lots to do working on shipping orders, the meat plant, USDA paperwork and an all-staff meeting at the Burgerhouse – but got to load up two trucks, a trailer, a quad and breakaway roping sled with five horses and four grateful girls to drive over the mountain to a dry indoor arena for family pizza dinner for barrels, poles and roping practice. Getting ready for a district rodeo this weekend. Also… Gilly LOVES Brian so much it cracks us all up. 🤣 I think they look like twins in this photo! #m5yearinphotos

Jan 2/2023. 💫 Sunrise on a frosty pasture, photo by Brian. Lambs to warm by the fire and bottle feed all day. Snow came by early afternoon. Cut a grocery store run short (25 min over the mountain) but made a delicious new recipe inspired by @rockingbarhranch for dinner. JJ went hiking with Brian. Girls rode horses in the cleared out hay barn for some dry dirt and made lots of lamb bottles. ♥️

Jan 1/2023. I used to keep a daily journal log recording everything I did that day until it filled the little lined page. Nothing exciting, just a record. When we got engaged and blogs became a thing, I started an almost daily blog post on “Maryandheff” and then “babyheff” when we got pregnant and then had Francie. It morphed to heff.family at some point and still holds a record of nearly every day of parenting up until moving to the ranch… when the ease of recording our days became so much easier on Instagram. Sharing our life and nuances of our days is something that makes me happy. I feel a little of the sense of accomplishment I got from my daily journal logs in the documentation of life. But Instagram has changed so much – with stories and reels and video… they can be fun to create but I miss the old fashioned documentation and I worry so much is lost in 24-hour expiring story snippets. My New Years goal is to go back to the documentation of photo posts each day and sharing life just how it happens… with photos and stories and the everyday no matter how unexciting. Here’s to starting the first post… one day late. 😊 *also – the middle landscape and what is about to be the first photo of my day 2 post were both taken by @heffbrian. This panoramic at the top of his hike above our house looking out at the fog settling in our valley. I’ll be sharing more of the photos he sends me from early mornings and afternoon hikes I hope too!

It’s been chilly around here but we are warming up today and the Farm Store is a-buzz with Christmas energy as we ship the last of our holiday boxes out to you and your gift recipients – we restocked tomahawks and filets if you want to get a box before Christmas! Thanks for all of your support this year and especially this holiday season. We couldn’t do this without you! ♥️ *also thinking of all you ranchers in Montana and the states getting serious weather today and tomorrow. Makes our temps look tropical – we are sending you good thoughts taking care of of your livestock in serious sub zero temps!!

It’s been COLD and frosty on the ranch these past several days as the fog settles deep in our valley and the sun can’t poke through. It’s a beautiful sight to see, every branch, barbed wire fence and blade of grass is covered in a thick heavy hoarfrost. It makes chores a little harder but the woodstove warmth that much warmer. ✨ 📸 by @heffbrian at morning feeding with JJ in the feed truck.

We don’t do anything unless we are proud of it… and we are really proud of the pastured pork we are raising at Five Marys. This week, we officially became one of only two ranches in the state who are “Prop 12 Compliant” which means we meet the new animal welfare standards for all pork sold in California. This means our sows have plenty of space to farrow in our maternity barn we built specifically for birthing piglets as comfortably and safely as possible year round. Prop 12 is a proposition that was passed in 2018 by the voters in California that required any pork products sold in the state (even if they are raised elsewhere) have been raised with at least 24 square feet of space to farrow and nurse. Our program of course has always exceeded these standards as most pastured operations do but it took a lot of time, legwork and paperwork to officially attain certification – maybe more than it should of because we were one of the first. The second ranch to be certified is our neighbor, Richie and his family, in the pasture next to us who raises and farrows pigs for us too. If you order from us, you’ll now see a note on your order confirmation that Five Marys pork is prop 12 certified! *we had to go through this process despite the fact we are far more than compliant to continue to sell pork in California, but it’s very possible prop 12 may get overturned by the US Supreme Court.

Fort Jones Christmas Parade was a goof one this year! Tess was Mary in our church float in the Nativity Scene and the big girls helped get her ready. JJ was working on the ranch with Brian but they made it in time to watch the parade from in front of Five Marys Farm Shop and the restaurant (one of the busiest days of the year at the Burgerhouse!) This was the first year Brian wasn’t driving a float for the elementary school or for H or the church and actually got to watch our darling little small town parade. Get us all in the Christmas spirit! #fortjoneschristmasparade #m5christmas #smalltowntraditions
